JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Mountains of uncollected garbage are piling up on streets across Johannesburg, raising concerns about hygiene and public health as casual workers for Pikitup, the city’s waste management entity, enter their fourth day of protests.

The demonstrations, which began last Friday, have crippled waste collection services in ten depots across the city. Casual workers, facing the expiration of their contracts, are demanding permanent employment from Pikitup.

With overflowing bins lining sidewalks and rubbish accumulating on street corners, residents are expressing growing anxiety. One resident, speaking to Eyewitness News, highlighted the potential health risks, particularly in areas prone to rodent infestations. “We’re only a week into no collection, but the trash is starting to pile up,” they said. “Everybody’s worried because our area already has problems with rats and mice.”

Another resident voiced concerns about the stench and the impact on children’s well-being. “The trash is going to attract flies and create a terrible smell,” they said. “With all the rot, it’s not just unpleasant, it’s dangerous, especially for those of us with kids who play outside.”

Meanwhile, the protesting workers have pledged to escalate their demonstrations throughout the week, putting further strain on sanitation services in Africa’s economic hub. Pikitup officials have not yet commented on the workers’ demands or outlined a plan to address the mounting waste crisis.
