In a thrilling encounter at Sharjah, New Zealand edged past the West Indies by eight runs to secure their spot in the Women’s T20 World Cup final. Despite Deandra Dottin’s all-around heroics, the White Ferns held their nerve in a nail-biting finish, setting up a final clash against South Africa in Dubai on Sunday.
Dottin was the standout performer for the West Indies, claiming an impressive 4-22 as New Zealand posted a modest total of 128-9. The Kiwi innings got off to a steady start, with openers Suzie Bates (26) and Georgia Plimmer (33) putting together a 48-run partnership. However, Dottin’s introduction turned the game in West Indies’ favor, as she dismissed key batters Amelia Kerr, Brooke Halliday, Maddy Green, and Rosemary Mair, stalling New Zealand’s momentum.
Late in the innings, Isabella Gaze added some crucial runs with a brisk 20 from 14 balls, helping New Zealand set a defendable target for their bowlers.
West Indies, in reply, found themselves in trouble early as New Zealand’s bowlers delivered a disciplined performance. Captain Hayley Matthews managed just 15 before falling, leaving the burden on Dottin to rescue her side. She responded by clubbing three sixes in her aggressive knock of 33 off 22 deliveries, giving the Caribbean side a fighting chance.
But once Dottin was dismissed, New Zealand clawed their way back. Afy Fletcher (17 not out) and Zaida James (14) kept the chase alive, but they fell short of the target as New Zealand’s bowlers tightened the screws in the final overs. Off-spinner Eden Carson’s 3-29 from four overs earned her the Player of the Match award and proved pivotal in restricting West Indies to 120-8.
With the win, New Zealand advanced to their third Women’s T20 World Cup final, having previously lost in 2009 and 2010. The White Ferns now face South Africa, who shocked defending champions Australia in the other semi-final, in what promises to be an exciting title decider in Dubai.
As the final approaches, New Zealand will be keen to end their long wait for a T20 World Cup title, while South Africa will be looking to claim their first-ever global crown. Both teams have shown grit and resilience to reach this stage, setting up a mouth-watering finale for cricket fans around the world.
