Deadly Snacks: Alexandra Community Demands Justice After Child’s Tragic Death

Alexandra residents in the north of Johannesburg, are deeply upset following the heartbreaking death of a nine-year-old girl from allegedly poisoned snacks on Saturday, November 2. The community’s demand for justice has led the police to call for calm.

Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the spokesperson for the Gauteng police, reported that an inquest docket has been opened in response to the tragic event. “According to reports, Alexandra officers responded to an emergency involving a mother and her two children experiencing severe stomach pains. Sadly, the nine-year-old girl was declared dead, while her mother and four-year-old sibling were hospitalized. A multidisciplinary team of police investigators, health professionals, and other stakeholders will investigate the circumstances surrounding the food consumed by the victims before their illness,” she explained.

Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni, Gauteng police commissioner, urged the public to allow investigators to conduct their work without interference. “We have assembled a team of specialists working closely with government partners to thoroughly investigate this incident. Our deepest condolences go out to the grieving family, and we wish the mother and the surviving child a swift recovery,” Mthombeni stated.

Given the increasing concerns about snack-related health risks, particularly for children, there is a pressing need for the Department of Health together with toxicologists to distinguish the matter. Such collaboration could proactively address potential threats and safeguard vulnerable populations before further incidents occur.
