Eskom Takes City Power to Court Over R1 Billion Bill

South Africans, brace yourselves for another potential power struggle. Eskom, South Africa’s national power utility, has hauled City Power, the City of Johannesburg’s electricity distributor, to the High Court in Johannesburg. The reason? A whopping R1.073 billion bill that City Power refuses to settle.
This news comes at a particularly frustrating time, as many areas in South Africa are already battling with rolling blackouts. Eskom argues that City Power’s delinquency not only threatens its own financial stability but also hinders its ability to invest in new infrastructure and keep the lights on for the entire country.

However, the plot thickens. City Power claims they’re being overbilled by Eskom for bulk purchases dating back to 2021, contesting the validity of the R1 billion bill. Eskom vehemently denies these claims and will be presenting its case through arbitration.
