In 2023, a group of leading South African companies and organizations came together to form the South African Artificial Intelligence Association (SAAIA). The association’s goal is to promote the responsible use of AI in South Africa for the benefit of all.
The founding members of SAAIA include:
- Michalsons, a law firm specializing in technology and innovation
- GIZ, the German Agency for International Cooperation
- ExploreAI, an AI consultancy firm
- Cirrus AI, an AI startup
- TinyML Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes the use of machine learning on small devices
- Augmented Startups, an accelerator for AI startups
- Data Economy Policy Hub (DepHUB), a research and policy organization
SAAIA’s work will focus on four key areas:
- Policy: The association will work to develop and promote policies that support the responsible use of AI in South Africa.
- Education: SAAIA will provide education and training on AI to businesses, government, and the public.
- Research: The association will fund and conduct research on AI.
- Collaboration: SAAIA will facilitate collaboration between businesses, government, and academia on AI projects.
The formation of SAAIA is a significant step forward for the development of AI in South Africa. The association’s work will help to ensure that AI is used for good in South Africa, and that its benefits are shared by all.
