New York – The South African cricket team roared into the 2024 T20 World Cup with a dominant display against Sri Lanka, securing a resounding six-wicket victory in the Group D opener played at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Monday.
Sri Lanka Falter Early:
Sri Lanka, who won the toss and elected to bat, got off to a shaky start. South Africa’s pace attack, led by the fiery Anrich Nortje, proved too hot to handle. Opener Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for a duck in the very first over, setting the tone for a Sri Lankan batting collapse.
Nortje Leads the Charge:
Nortje continued his relentless spell, dismissing Kusal Mendis cheaply in his next over. The Sri Lankan middle order crumbled under the pressure. Wanindu Hasaranga, the Sri Lankan captain, tried to provide some resistance but was caught behind by Quinton de Kock off the bowling of Keshav Maharaj for 12 runs.

Sri Lanka’s batting woes continued, and wickets fell at regular intervals. The spin duo of Tabraiz Shamsi and Maharaj choked the flow of runs, making it near impossible for the Lankan batsmen to score freely. Ultimately, Sri Lanka were bundled out for a meager 77 runs in just 19 overs, setting a new record low score for them in a T20 World Cup match.
Comfortable Chase for South Africa:
Chasing a paltry target of 78 runs, South Africa openers Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks started cautiously. However, they gradually upped the ante, finding boundaries at regular intervals. Sri Lanka’s bowlers, lacking confidence after their dismal batting performance, struggled to create any pressure.
Clinical Finish by South Africa:
The experienced Aiden Markram joined the party after de Kock’s dismissal, anchoring the chase with a composed 27 runs. David Miller provided a quickfire cameo of 18 runs before being dismissed. Wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen finished the formalities with a crisp four, securing a comfortable victory for the Proteas with 3.4 overs to spare.
Nortje Deservedly Named Player of the Match:
Anrich Nortje was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match award for his magnificent bowling performance. He finished with figures of 4 wickets for 10 runs in his four overs, completely dismantling the Sri Lankan batting lineup.
This clinical display from South Africa sends a strong message to the rest of Group D. They will be looking to carry this momentum forward in their upcoming matches. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will need to regroup quickly and address their batting frailties before their next encounter.
