Community Mourns Sixth Child Victim in Soweto Poisoning Tragedy

Johannesburg, South Africa – The community of Naledi, Soweto, is grappling with another devastating loss as the sixth child who was suspected of being poisoned has passed away. Seven-year-old Katleho Olifant succumbed to his injuries on Saturday after spending a week in intensive care.

The tragedy unfolded last week when five children died after consuming snacks purchased from a local store. Katleho, who was the only survivor, was initially hospitalized in critical condition. Many had hoped that he would recover and be able to provide valuable information to aid in the ongoing investigation.

However, Katleho’s aunt, Sibongile Sekgalo, revealed that the family was only informed of his deteriorating medical condition shortly before his death. The news has plunged the family into further grief and despair.

“We don’t want to see this happen ever again, anywhere in the world,” Sekgalo said. “No parent should have to bury their own child, especially at such a young age. It’s devastating.”

The community is reeling from the loss of six young lives and is demanding answers regarding the cause of the poisoning. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the source of the toxic substance and hold those responsible accountable.
