What you need to know and why it’s important
The 2024 South African general election is scheduled to be held on a date to be announced by the President, but it must be held between May and August 2024. In this election, South Africans will elect members of the National Assembly and the Provincial Legislatures.
The National Assembly is the lower house of the South African Parliament and has 400 members. The Provincial Legislatures are the legislatures of the nine provinces of South Africa and each has between 30 and 120 members, depending on the size of the province.
The party that wins the most seats in the National Assembly will form the government and its leader will become the President of South Africa. The President appoints a Cabinet from among the members of the National Assembly.
To be eligible to vote in the 2024 South African general election, you must be a South African citizen, at least 18 years old on election day, and registered to vote. You can register to vote online, at a Post Office, or at a local IEC office.
What you need to vote in the 2024 South African general election:
- Your South African identity document (ID)
- Your voter registration card (if you have one)
If you have lost your voter registration card, you can apply for a new one at a local IEC office.
On election day, you will go to your polling station and present your ID to the election officials. They will check your voter registration status and give you the ballot papers for your election.
You will then mark your ballot papers and cast them in the ballot boxes.
Tips for voting in the 2024 South African general election:
- Make sure you are registered to vote. You can check your voter registration status online or by contacting the IEC.
- Find out where your polling station is. You can find your polling station on the IEC website or by contacting the IEC.
- Arrive at your polling station early to avoid long queues.
- Bring your South African ID and, if you have one, your voter registration card.
- Make sure you mark your ballot papers correctly. Ask an election official for help if you are not sure how to mark your ballot papers.
- Cast your ballot papers in the ballot boxes.
