Evacuated and Empty Plates: Ladysmith Flood Victims Wait for Food Aid

LADYSMITH, KwaZulu-Natal – Dozens of Ladysmith residents who fled floodwaters this week find themselves facing another hardship: hunger. Evacuated on Monday night to a local sports center, over 70 people, including small children, haven’t received any food since their displacement.
This is the second flood to strike the rural town in two weeks, adding to the distress of losing their homes. While thankfully no casualties have been reported, the displaced community faces immediate concerns.
Phumzile Sithole, speaking for some who remain hesitant to be named, pleaded for urgent assistance. “We haven’t eaten anything,” Sithole said. “We don’t know what to do. All we have are these blankets from the Al-Imdaad Foundation.”
The absence of support from local authorities adds to the frustration. Sithole claimed their councillor hasn’t even checked on them, raising concerns about the adequacy of the response.
However, the Alfred Duma Local Municipality has confirmed Deputy Mayor Sizwe Simelane will visit the affected community on Tuesday afternoon. Whether this visit translates into prompt and tangible assistance remains to be seen.
The plight of Ladysmith’s flood victims highlights the vulnerability of communities exposed to repeated natural disasters and the crucial role of timely intervention in ensuring their basic needs are met.
