Nigerian Port Workers Arrested in Smuggling Ring, Kingpins Believed to be in South Africa

Nigerian authorities have arrested three port workers suspected of involvement in a major smuggling operation. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) announced on Sunday, February 25th, that the workers allegedly facilitated the import of two shipping containers from Durban, South Africa, containing illegal drugs, firearms, and military-grade equipment.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Falowa Samuel Kayode, Anjorin Idowu, and Uzairu Ahmed Iguda. Kayode is accused of clearing the containers through customs, while Idowu is a dock worker, and Iguda oversaw operations at a port terminal. A fourth suspect, Mohammed Muktar Sule, believed to be a key organizer within the smuggling network, remains at large.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the investigation has revealed the involvement of three additional individuals suspected to be “kingpins” based in South Africa. These individuals are believed to be connected to the importation of the containers and are now on the agency’s wanted list.
The discovery of the smuggled goods marks a significant development in Nigerian efforts to combat illegal drug trafficking and the proliferation of firearms. The involvement of port workers raises concerns about potential vulnerabilities within the country’s import system, and the investigation is likely to continue in an attempt to apprehend the remaining suspects and dismantle the entire smuggling operation.
