Gauteng’s finances for the upcoming year were clarified as Finance MEC Jacob Mamabolo presented the 2024 Budget speech. He addressed crucial issues like the divisive E-toll debt and efforts to combat crime with the AmaPanyaza initiative.

AmaPanyaza: Strengthening Community Safety

Allocating R2.3 billion towards Gauteng’s Community Safety department, Mamabolo highlighted the importance of proactive crime prevention measures. This funding will support initiatives such as Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s Crime Prevention Wardens, enhancing aerial surveillance with helicopters and drones, and establishing a Provincial Integrated Command Centre to coordinate law enforcement efforts. Additionally, the government’s commitment to fostering safer communities is reflected in the allocation of resources towards combating gender-based violence.

Infrastructure Investment

With R37.2 billion allocated for infrastructure delivery in the upcoming financial year, Mamabolo emphasized the continuation of ongoing projects and meeting the growing demand for service delivery. Since 2019, the government has allocated a total budget of R58.6 billion for infrastructure, demonstrating its dedication to maintaining and expanding critical infrastructure assets essential for economic growth and development.

Informal Settlement Upgrades

Recognizing the urgent need to improve living conditions in townships, informal settlements, and hostels, the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements has allocated R5.8 billion for the new financial year. This investment, coupled with the Rapid Land Release Programme and Urban Renewal Programme, aims to provide housing and enhance residential infrastructure, addressing long-standing challenges faced by vulnerable communities.

Job Creation Initiatives

In a bid to stimulate economic growth and tackle unemployment, Gauteng’s Department of Economic Development will receive a substantial cash injection of R1.7 billion in the 2024/25 financial year. This funding, totaling R5.3 billion over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, will support job creation initiatives and stimulate the township economy. Programs such as the Nasi iSpani mass recruitment program will continue to facilitate access to job opportunities for youth while enhancing service delivery.
