As South Africa gears up for its 2024 general and provincial elections on May 29, a surprising contender has entered the political arena. Macgyver Mukhwevho, widely known as Mac G, a renowned podcaster with a massive following among millennials and Gen Z’s, has thrown his hat into the ring.
Mac G, who has never been known for political activism and admitted to never voting in previous elections, announced last year his intention to participate in the upcoming polls. Now, with a last-minute campaign, he aims to secure the necessary 1,000 signatures required to run as an independent candidate for Parliament.
Despite his popularity and substantial online following, questions linger regarding Mac G’s seriousness about this unexpected venture into politics. Some speculate whether his candidacy is merely a publicity stunt to generate content for his podcast, which boasts over a million subscribers.
Recent Instagram posts show Mac G rallying support in Braamfontein alongside his co-host Sol Phenduka and comedian Eugene Khoza. The CTA has garnered significant attention, with over 4,000 likes on a single post, hinting at potential support for his candidacy.
However, the road to securing signatures is not without its challenges. New electoral rules set by the Electoral Commission of South Africa mandate independent candidates to gather 1,000 signatures by a looming deadline. These signatures must be submitted along with a nomination form containing detailed information of the backers.
While Mac G’s campaign has generated buzz, other political newcomers face similar hurdles. Change Starts Now party, led by Roger Jardine, recently withdrew from the race, citing difficulties in meeting the stringent signature requirements imposed on new political parties.
Amidst these developments, questions arise regarding the feasibility of Mac G’s bid for a parliamentary seat. As the deadline for signature submissions approaches, the outcome remains uncertain.
