South Africans are glued into Showmax’s newest documentary ‘Tracking Thabo Bester’.

It premiered on Friday afternoon despite Thabo Bester and Nandipha Magudumana’s attempts to stop people from seeing it in court. The first two episodes are only available on Showmax, and fans of true crime are captivated by the story of Bester, a criminal, and his partner, a once-popular aesthetics doctor.

The documentary explores the accusations against Bester and Magudumana, allowing viewers to form their own opinions.

The documentary kicks off with GroundUp journalists Marecia Damons and Daniel Steyn looking into a tip-off suggesting that the burnt body found at Mangaung Correctional Centre might not have been Thabo Bester. Nkosinathi Sekeleni, Nandipha’s older brother, who exposed Magudumana’s relationship with the notorious Facebook rapist, is also featured in the documentary.

Recent court proceedings have uncovered that Sekeleni was paid R30,000 for the “exclusive rights” to his story and for “providing materials from his childhood relevant to his interviews”. Last year, the country was shocked by the unfolding story of Thabo Bester’s daring escape and his luxurious lifestyle with Nandipha Magudumana, culminating in their flight from the country and subsequent extradition from Tanzania

It’s no wonder that Bester and Magudumana were among Google’s most searched people in 2023. The entire nation was captivated by the saga of Bestermania, a tumultuous tale of love, murder, deceit, and corruption.
