Hold on to your funny bones, because the 11th Annual Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards were a whirlwind of laughter and a testament to South Africa’s hilarious talent! Picture this: me, trying to contain my snorts of laughter as I take notes, while the country’s top comics battle it out for those coveted Waldos (yeah, that’s the name of the trophy – cute, right?)

The awards – which actually took place on the 13th of April 2024 were a feel-good, proudly South African celebration of the guys and gals who keep us in stitches. And trust me, this wasn’t your average stiff awards show. There were stand-up routines, side-splitting skits, infectious energy, and some seriously questionable dance moves (looking at you, Khanyisa Bunu and the 250 Machine crew –  but hey, points for enthusiasm!).

Mpho ‘Popps’ Modikoane shows appreciation, with his Waldo, to supporters after being crowned “Comedian of the Year 2024”. Post credit: Mpho Popps Modikoane via X.

Mpho “Popps” Modikoane, the evening’s host and reigning Comedian of the Year, opened the show with a shout-out to all those South Africans who are kicking butt on the global stage, from our Grammy winners to UFC champs. Let’s face it, we rock! And while he’s been a major force in the industry, let’s clarify something: Mpho’s rise to comedic stardom didn’t happen overnight, no matter how effortlessly funny he makes it seem.

This year’s winners were a diverse mix of established stars and fresh faces. Here’s the full rundown:

  • Breakthrough Act of the Year Award: Vafa Naraghi
  • Savanna Newcomer Award: Callum Hitchcock
  • Joe Mafela Award: Sifiso Nene
  • Funny is Funny Award: King Price for Generating Gees
  • Best Comedic Show/Festival Award: Bioscope Sundays
  • Hall of Fame Award: Marc Lottering
  • Best Comedic Writer Award: Kagiso Lediga

  • Best Solo Show Award: Sifiso Nene for Baby Mama Drama
  • Headliner of the Year Award: Robby Collins
  • Comedian of the Year Award: Mpho “Popps” Modikoane

Let’s talk highlights! Vafa Naraghi was on fire, proving she’s a force to be reckoned with. Sifiso Nene brought the house down, and Marc Lottering’s Hall of Fame induction was a touching tribute to a comedy legend.

But it wasn’t just about the awards – the night showcased how this industry is like one big, dysfunctional, hilarious family.  And the sponsors deserve a shout-out too! Savannah Premium Ciders along with One-eyed Jack, Mrs. Ball’s, LIFT, and Comedy Central all contributed to the vibrant atmosphere and provided crucial support to the comedy industry. This year, event attendees enjoyed a celebratory atmosphere with delicious food and refreshing beverages.

The awards will air on Comedy Central (DStv Channel 122) on May 18th, so set those reminders! Consider it the perfect excuse to ditch the dishes, grab some snacks, and prepare to laugh until your sides ache.
