Dubai, known for its arid climate, experienced unprecedented rainfall over the past 24 hours, leading to widespread flooding and speculation about the causes behind this extraordinary weather event.

Unusual Rainfall Extremes

While Dubai typically receives less than 100mm (3.9in) of rainfall annually, nearby Al-Ain recorded a staggering 256mm (10in) of rain within just 24 hours. This extreme downpour was attributed to a “cut off” low-pressure weather system, which drew in warm, moist air and blocked other weather systems from moving through the region.

Professor Maarten Ambaum, a meteorologist from the University of Reading, described this as a very rare rainfall event, highlighting the unique weather patterns in the Gulf region.

Climate Change Influence

The role of climate change in intensifying the rainfall cannot be definitively quantified yet. However, experts agree that warmer air, which can hold more moisture, likely contributed to the record-breaking intensity of the rain. Climate scientist Richard Allan emphasized that heavy rainfall events are becoming more potent due to increased moisture in a warming climate.

Studies project that annual rainfall in the UAE could increase by up to 30% by the end of the century if global warming continues unabated, underscoring the urgent need to address climate change.

Cloud seeding, a method used to enhance rainfall by introducing small particles into clouds, was wrongly attributed to causing the extreme weather by some on social media. Experts clarified that even if cloud seeding had occurred recently, its impact would have been minimal compared to the natural weather dynamics influenced by climate change.

Prof. Diana Francis of Khalifa University highlighted that cloud seeding is typically not deployed during intense weather systems like the recent one due to their large-scale nature.

UAE’s Preparedness and Adaptation

The UAE, with its heavily urbanized landscape, faces challenges in managing extreme rainfall and preventing deadly floods. Robust infrastructure and adaptation strategies are crucial to cope with more frequent and intense rainfall events.

Prof. Francis emphasized the importance of adapting infrastructure to absorb and manage excess rainfall, suggesting measures such as building reservoirs and improving drainage systems.

In response to these challenges, the UAE’s Road and Transport Authority established a dedicated unit in January to manage floods and enhance the country’s preparedness for extreme weather events.

As extreme weather events become more common globally, proactive measures and adaptation strategies are essential to mitigate their impact and ensure the safety and resilience of communities in vulnerable regions like Dubai and the broader UAE.
