KwaZulu-Natal law enforcement has dealt a blow to drug traffickers with the seizure of R15 million worth of cocaine at the Richards Bay port.
The operation, which netted a significant amount of the illegal substance, highlights ongoing efforts to curb the flow of drugs into South Africa.
Acting on a tip-off, authorities became suspicious of a vessel arriving from Colombia, which reportedly declared iron ore as its cargo. A thorough search upon arrival revealed cleverly concealed blocks of cocaine, with an estimated street value of R15 million.
While no arrests have been made yet, investigations are underway to identify those involved in the smuggling attempt. This bust adds to a string of successful drug interdictions in KwaZulu-Natal, with authorities seizing over R1.5 billion worth of drugs in the past six months.
This latest development comes amidst a nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking, with Operation Shanela leading to the arrest of nearly 50,000 drug possession suspects and over 17,000 individuals for drug dealing. The KwaZulu-Natal bust serves as a testament to the vigilance of law enforcement agencies and their commitment to disrupting drug trafficking networks.
