Mamelodi Sundowns continued their dominance of the DStv Premiership with a resounding 5-1 victory over arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Thursday, May 2nd. The win takes Sundowns a significant step closer to securing yet another league title.

The match, which marked the 80th meeting between the two giants of South African football, was a one-sided affair from the outset. Sundowns took control of the midfield early on, stifling any attacking threat from the Amakhosi.

The Brazilians, as Sundowns are nicknamed, opened the scoring in the 56th minute through Matias Esquivel. The lead was doubled ten minutes later by Tashreeq Matthews, before a controversial penalty decision saw Mduduzi Shabalala convert from the spot in the 85th minute.

Thembinkosi Lorch added a fourth for Sundowns deep into injury time, before Lucas Ribeiro rounded off the scoring in the dying seconds. Kaizer Chiefs’ solitary goal came through a consolation strike from Samir Nurkovic in the 90th minute.

The result leaves Sundowns in a commanding position at the top of the DStv Premiership table. The Brazilians are now nine points clear of second-placed Royal AM with just a handful of games remaining in the season.

With the DStv Premiership title seemingly wrapped up, Sundowns will now shift their focus to the Nedbank Cup and the CAF Champions League, where they are still in contention for glory. Kaizer Chiefs, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back and secure a strong finish to the season.
