PARIS – May 11, 2024 – Kylian Mbappe, the prolific French striker, has confirmed his departure from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season, setting the stage for a highly anticipated move to Real Madrid.
In a video posted on social media, the 25-year-old announced, “It’s my last year at Paris Saint-Germain. I will not extend and the adventure will come to an end in a few weeks.”
Mbappe’s exit marks the culmination of a seven-year tenure that began with a record-breaking transfer in 2017. He leaves as a club legend, boasting 255 goals and a trophy cabinet overflowing with six Ligue 1 titles, three French Cups, and two League Cups.
While a Champions League title eluded him, Mbappe established himself as a global superstar, adding the 2018 World Cup trophy to his list of achievements.
His decision to depart was reportedly communicated privately to PSG in February. Though speculation swirled for months, Mbappe remained tight-lipped about his next destination. However, Spanish media reports claim a pre-contract agreement with Real Madrid awaits him in July.
“It’s a lot of emotions,” Mbappe said. “It’s hard, but I think I needed this, a new challenge, after seven years.”
This news comes as a blow to PSG, who are navigating a period of transition following the departures of Lionel Messi and Neymar last season. Mbappe’s leadership and on-field brilliance will be sorely missed.
The Ligue 1 champions will formally bid farewell to Mbappe on Sunday at their Parc des Princes stadium, where they’ll be presented with the league trophy after their final home game of the season against Toulouse.
Mbappe will then have the opportunity to add another trophy to his collection in the French Cup final on May 25th before officially closing the curtain on his remarkable PSG chapter.
