GEORGE, South Africa – May 11, 2024 – In a moment of hope amidst tragedy, rescue workers in George, South Africa, pulled a survivor from the ruins of a collapsed building after a staggering 118 hours.
The man, who remains unidentified, was one of 81 people trapped when the five-story residential building gave way on Monday. Exhausted but responsive, he was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
This remarkable rescue brings a glimmer of light to a devastating situation. Thirty-eight people remain unaccounted for, and the death toll stands at 13.
Western Cape Disaster Management chief, Colin Deiner, explained the meticulous strategy used to reach the survivor. “We started clearing each floor systematically,” he said. “Over the last two nights, we focused on lifting sections of the collapsed structure to create a stable area. This morning, we decided to shift our approach and investigate a section where the building initially gave way.”
Deiner added that the survivor reported feeling pressure on his legs, prompting the rescue team to carefully stabilize him before extraction. “We brought in surgeons to assess the situation and then carefully removed debris and rebar to create an access point,” he said. “Fortunately, the area around him was relatively clear, allowing for a quicker extraction than we had initially anticipated.”
This rescue serves as a testament to the unwavering dedication of rescue teams and the enduring human spirit. The search for survivors continues, with every minute holding the potential for another miracle.
