“Iwájú,” which translates roughly to “the future” in Yoruba, will be set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria. The series will explore important social themes while celebrating the city’s unique culture. Director Ziki Nelson highlights the show’s commitment to authenticity, stating, “There are certain harsher truths or realities that exist in modern day Lagos that were important to reflect.”

The collaboration wasn’t without its challenges. Merging creative visions from two different continents presented cultural clashes. However, Nelson believes these differences ultimately strengthened the project. “Both Disney and Kugali bring different things to the table,” he explains. “And ‘Iwájú’ as a series is a reflection of the strengths of what we both brought to the table.”

The production team boasts industry veteran Marlon West as visual effects supervisor. West, known for his work on Disney classics like “The Lion King” and “Frozen,” was drawn to the project’s unique blend of science fiction, Afrobeat music, and a distinctly African narrative.

“Iwájú” marks a significant milestone for Disney, representing the company’s first-ever African-focused story. Cultural consultant Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku emphasizes the importance of representation for young viewers. “Children are very imaginative and absorb a lot from what they see,” he says. “I just absorbed a lot from the things I consumed and I feel like I’m just doing the same thing.”

“Iwájú” is set to premiere on Disney+ on February 28, 2024.
