Macomia, Mozambique – Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi confirmed a major attack by armed groups on the northern town of Macomia, located in the gas-rich Cabo Delgado province. This region has been plagued by an insurgency linked to ISIS since 2017. Despite a significant security presence, attacks have intensified since January 2024.

Large-Scale Attack: Sources estimate hundreds of fighters participated in the assault, which began on Friday morning. Initial clashes lasted 45 minutes before the attackers regrouped and resumed fighting.

Security Concerns Rise: Friday’s attack marks a significant escalation and raises concerns about a potential security vacuum. A regional force deployed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in 2021 began withdrawing last month, with a complete pullout planned for July.

Troubled Region: Cabo Delgado has been grappling with an ongoing insurgency for several years. The insurgency is fueled by a complex mix of factors, including poverty, social grievances, and the discovery of valuable natural resources in the region.

Expert Analysis: Piers Pigou, an expert on Southern Africa, believes the Macomia attack validates concerns about security gaps created by the SADC withdrawal. He emphasizes that claims of stability in Cabo Delgado are unfounded.

Appeal for Support: President Nyusi acknowledges the risk of attacks during transitions and hopes for continued support from SADC forces. The extent of their current deployment and involvement in the ongoing fight remains unclear.
