BEDFORDVIEW, South Africa – A horrific accident on the N12 freeway near Bedfordview, Ekurhuleni, claimed the lives of two men on Monday. The incident, which involved three trucks and seven vehicles, shut down a major artery for hours as emergency services responded and investigated.
Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) firefighters were called to the scene at approximately 12:20 p.m. According to William Ntladi, media liaison officer for DEMS, the crash involved two articulated trucks, a fixed-body truck, and seven passenger cars.
The force of the collision tragically resulted in the deaths of the drivers of a truck and an SUV, who were declared dead at the scene. Ntladi confirmed that the N12 remained closed due to jack-knifed trucks and spilled hazardous materials.
“The entire freeway is temporarily closed,” Ntladi said. “The cause of the crash is unknown, and law enforcement units are on the scene conducting a full investigation.”
Ntladi added that emergency crews were working diligently to clear the wreckage and rehabilitate the accident scene. “The situation is still developing,” he said.
“The Jaws of Life had to be used to extricate the truck driver, while seven other occupants from all vehicles were medically treated before being transported to various hospitals around the City of Ekurhuleni.”
The N12 closure caused significant traffic disruptions in the area. Local authorities urged motorists to find alternative routes and avoid the affected area.
This incident highlights the dangers of South Africa’s roadways. Traffic accidents are a leading cause of death in the country, and authorities are continuously working to improve safety measures.
