Mngomezulu was also found guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, along with robbery.

According to Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in KwaZulu-Natal (NPA), Gumede was fatally shot after responding to a pick-up request. His car was later recovered in KwaMashu, with Mngomezulu found inside. Evidence, including fingerprints, ballistics, and vehicle tracking data, linked Mngomezulu to the crime.

The court heard emotional victim impact statements from Gumede’s family. They described him as a kind and hardworking man who served as the family’s breadwinner. His death has caused them significant financial hardship.

Mngomezulu will serve a life sentence of imprisonment, with his sentences running concurrently. The judge also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

The NPA commended the prosecution team and all stakeholders involved in securing the conviction. They expressed hope that this sentence will serve as a deterrent to future crimes.
