New Mpox Variant Raises Concerns in DR Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has identified a new and potentially more transmissible variant of Mpox, the virus related to smallpox. This discovery has sparked concern among health officials, as the new variant appears to be a mutation of a more severe strain.
Cause for Caution
The new variant was identified in Kamituga, a mining town in the eastern DRC. This region experiences a high degree of travel and movement of people, raising concerns that the variant could spread more easily within the DRC and potentially beyond its borders.
This new strain appears to be a mutation of the Clade 1 lineage of Mpox. While the currently dominant Clade 2 has caused a global outbreak with a very high survival rate, Clade 1 can be fatal in up to 10% of cases. The new variant’s link to over 240 cases and at least 3 deaths in Kamituga alone is a worrying sign.

While scientists are investigating the full extent of the new variant’s transmissibility, there are still many unknowns. Additionally, more research is needed to determine the severity of illness it causes compared to previous strains. Existing diagnostic tests might also not be sensitive enough to detect this specific mutation, highlighting the need for updated testing strategies.
