Police Minister Reports 130 Arrests for Election Day Crimes

Midrand – Police Minister Bheki Cele announced the arrest of 130 suspects for crimes committed on election day, with 20 of those individuals still in custody. Several others have been released on bail. Speaking at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) results centre in Midrand, Cele provided updates on the incidents that marred the 2024 general elections, which concluded on Sunday night.
Minister Cele stated that the majority of the charges involve attempts to incite violence at voting stations and within communities. These arrests underscore the heightened tensions that accompanied the election process, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
In response to potential post-election unrest, the army has been deployed to strategic areas identified as hotspots. This measure aims to prevent any outbreak of violence following the announcement of the election results. The Justice Crime Prevention and Security Cluster expressed satisfaction with how law enforcement agencies managed to prevent and respond to incidents that could have compromised the integrity of South Africa’s seventh general elections.
Cele’s briefing came after the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) assured him of their preparedness to maintain safety and security in the country during the post-election phase. NATJOINTS emphasized their ongoing commitment to ensuring a peaceful transition period.
In a related development, Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola addressed the ruling African National Congress (ANC)’s performance in the elections. Despite a poor showing at the polls, Lamola stressed that the ANC would accept the will of the people and learn from the electorate’s decisions.
“The ANC will take lessons from how the electorate voted. It’s a clear message that we must heed and respond to constructively,” Lamola stated.
As the IEC continues to finalize and announce the results, the focus remains on maintaining order and addressing any grievances that may arise from the election outcomes. The deployment of the army and the concerted efforts of law enforcement agencies reflect a commitment to preserving the democratic process and ensuring the safety of all South Africans.
