BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa – In a dramatic turn of events at the Free State High Court on Wednesday, convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester took the unusual step of representing himself. Bester, infamous as the “Facebook Rapist,” is currently facing charges related to his escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre in May 2022.
Appearing before Judge Cagney Musi, Bester expressed remorse for his past crimes but pleaded for the release of his nine co-accused. “These people have nothing to do with this,” Bester asserted, claiming his co-defendants were suffering unjustly. He went further, calling himself a “broken man” and expressing his heartbreak at their continued detention.
Bester’s erratic behavior continued as he requested the court consider imposing the death penalty, a punishment abolished in South Africa in 1995. He proposed a public petition to decide his fate, a request the judge is unlikely to entertain. Bester also launched a series of grievances, criticizing the Department of Correctional Services for allegedly monitoring his communication with his former lawyers and restricting his social interaction. He decried media portrayals of him and even complained about limitations placed on his courtroom attire.
The court granted Bester seven days to secure new legal representation. The ten defendants, including Bester’s girlfriend Nandipha Magudumana, are expected to return to court on July 24th. This latest development in the Bester saga adds a layer of complexity to a case that has already captured the nation’s attention.
