Saldanha Bay, South Africa — In a potential breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of six-year-old Joshlin Smith, police in the Western Cape have confirmed that a piece of clothing, believed to belong to the missing child, has been collected for forensic analysis. The discovery was made during a random search by community members in the Saldanha Bay area over the weekend.
The item of clothing, a jersey, was found and reported by vigilant residents, leading police forensic experts to swiftly collect it for detailed examination. Western Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, acknowledged the community’s crucial role in this development. “We can confirm that community members found a jersey during a random search of the surroundings. Police forensic experts collected the clothing items for forensic analysis. The investigation is ongoing with various specialised units that form part of an integrated investigation team. The investigation and search for the missing Joshlin continues,” Pojie said.
Joshlin Smith, a Grade 1 learner from Diazville Primary School, has been missing for 106 days since she vanished without a trace on February 19th, shortly after 5 PM. Despite exhaustive efforts, including searches by the community and activists, no significant leads have emerged until this recent discovery.
The case has gripped the local community and drawn national attention, particularly after Gayton McKenzie, leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), announced a R1 million reward for any information leading to Joshlin’s safe return. This substantial reward underscores the desperation and urgency felt by both the community and those close to Joshlin.
Meanwhile, four individuals are currently behind bars in connection with Joshlin’s disappearance. Joshlin’s mother, Kelly Smith, her boyfriend, Jacquen ‘Boeta’ Appolis, along with Stevano van Rhyn and Lourentia Lombaard, were apprehended and charged with kidnapping and trafficking in persons for the purpose of exploitation. The State alleges that Joshlin was sold for R20,000.
The accused appeared in the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court on May 13th, where Kelly Smith was notably visibly pregnant. The court proceedings revealed that the State’s investigation remains active, with forensic reports and cellphone data being meticulously analyzed. All new information is being pursued rigorously by the authorities.
As the group awaits their next court appearance on July 15th, the discovery of the jersey provides a glimmer of hope in an otherwise grim and distressing situation. The police and specialized units continue their tireless work, leaving no stone unturned in their search for Joshlin.
The community’s unwavering support and the involvement of various activists highlight the collective determination to find Joshlin and bring those responsible for her disappearance to justice. As the investigation progresses, the nation remains hopeful that this latest development will lead to a resolution and ultimately, the safe return of Joshlin Smith.
