Cape Town, South Africa – The City of Cape Town has issued a public warning urging residents and visitors to stay away from seals following the confirmation of a rabies case.
Western Cape Provincial Veterinary Services confirmed that a Cape fur seal found deceased at Big Bay on May 22nd tested positive for rabies.
“As a precaution, the public must avoid close contact with Cape fur seals,” the City advised. This precaution applies to the entire Cape Peninsula coastline. The warning extends to pet owners, who are urged to keep their dogs and other animals on a leash and away from seals.
Anyone who comes into contact with a seal, especially if bitten, should seek immediate medical attention and report the incident to the relevant authorities. The City is continuing its investigation and will provide updates to the public.
