JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – South African musician Shebeshxt, whose real name is Lehlogonolo Chauke, is in mourning after his nine-year-old daughter tragically died in a car accident on Saturday night.
The accident occurred on the R37 road near Smelters Mine in Limpopo province as Shebeshxt was traveling to a concert. He was reportedly en route to Lebowakgomo to perform at an ANC Siyanqoba Rally celebration event.
According to Limpopo transport department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene, Shebeshxt’s Volkswagen Polo collided with a truck just after 10:00 pm. The impact caused the car to overturn.
“The young girl is believed to have passed away at the scene,” Chuene said on Sunday morning. “Shebeshxt himself sustained serious injuries and received treatment at the scene before being transported to the hospital.”
Two other passengers were also in the vehicle. One remains unidentified and sustained moderate to light injuries.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by the South African Police Service.
Graphic videos circulating on social media show the aftermath of the crash. The girl’s body can be seen covered near the mangled Volkswagen Polo. In another video, Shebeshxt appears on the ground with bandages on his head and right foot, visibly distressed.
This is not the first car accident Shebeshxt has been involved in this year. In January, he escaped unharmed from a separate collision that left his new car totaled.
The musician’s scheduled performance on Sunday has not been confirmed. Tributes and messages of condolences have begun pouring in on social media for the musician and his family.
