Alberton, Gauteng – A 48-year-old nurse was arrested on Wednesday morning at her home in Vosloorus on suspicion of murdering her 21-year-old domestic worker, Busiswa Nxumalo. The arrest follows a complex investigation into Nxumalo’s death in January 2022 and allegations of a R6 million life insurance scam.
Authorities allege the nurse, whose identity cannot be revealed until her first court appearance, took out three life insurance policies on Nxumalo with different companies – Stangen Life, Outsurance, and King Price – totaling R6 million in coverage. The nurse was reportedly the sole beneficiary on all three policies.
The arrest occurred at the nurse’s residence in Vosloorus. The investigation suggests Nxumalo was murdered at the nurse’s former home in Lenasia South in January 2022. Nxumalo’s body was discovered at a nearby landfill with a fatal throat injury.
Police believe the life insurance policies were obtained fraudulently. According to investigators, the nurse procured the policies just seven months after recruiting Nxumalo from Nomgoma, KwaZulu-Natal, to work as a domestic worker in her home. The terms of the policies allegedly entitled the beneficiary to a R6 million payout if Nxumalo’s death resulted from unnatural causes.
It is said that the insurance companies suspected fraudulent activity and froze the policies before any payouts could be made.
The nurse, originally from KwaHlabisa in northern KwaZulu-Natal, is expected to appear in court soon facing charges of murder and insurance fraud.
