Johannesburg – Gauteng police have apprehended 43 individuals following a raid on a house in Sandton, north of Johannesburg. The operation, conducted on Wednesday, uncovered a large-scale counterfeit SIM card operation.

Authorities seized thousands of imitation SIM cards representing all major South African cellphone network providers. A significant amount of computer equipment was also confiscated. Technicians from the targeted mobile networks were called in to verify the authenticity of the seized SIM cards.

“Based on the initial investigation,” said Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo, “we suspect the counterfeit SIM cards were being manufactured on-site.”

The arrested individuals include 41 undocumented immigrants and two South African citizens. They face a range of charges, including contravening the Cyber Crime Act, fraud, and immigration violations.

The proliferation of counterfeit SIM cards poses a significant security risk. These cards can be used to commit various crimes, including financial fraud and identity theft. Police have not yet revealed the intended purpose of the seized counterfeit SIM cards, but investigations are ongoing.

This raid serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and collaboration in combating cybercrime. Network providers, law enforcement agencies, and the public all play a vital role in disrupting illegal activities that threaten online security.
