Two Arrested in Limpopo Crackdown on Illegal Mining

Diphale, Sekhukhune – Limpopo police have apprehended two suspected illegal miners in Diphale, Sekhukhune district. The arrest comes amidst ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining activities in the province.
Authorities also recovered stockpiles of chrome believed to have been prepared for illicit transportation. Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that the arrested individuals will face charges of illegal mining and violating the Immigration Act. Their court appearance at the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court is expected to take place soon.
“Acting on a tip-off,” explained Colonel Ledwaba, “a multi-disciplinary team of officers mobilized and raided the illegal mining site in Diphale. Our information proved accurate, as stockpiles of chrome were located atop a mountain there. The team successfully retrieved the chrome and secured it in a safe location. Additionally, they seized a significant amount of mining equipment during the operation.”
Colonel Ledwaba’s comments highlight the collaborative approach adopted by Limpopo law enforcement in tackling illegal mining. This coordinated effort aims to disrupt these unlawful operations and safeguard the region’s natural resources.
The extent of the recovered chrome’s potential value and the specific type of mining equipment seized were not disclosed by police at this time. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
