Johannesburg, South Africa – A woman in her early 40s was shot and killed on a Metrobus in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, on Wednesday morning in what is believed to be a targeted attack.

The victim, a Nedbank employee, was waiting to board the bus at Station Six in Fleurhof when a gunman already on board opened fire. According to witnesses, the shooter ignored other passengers and pursued the woman as she attempted to flee, firing multiple shots. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are searching for the suspect, who fled in a white Volkswagen Polo or Golf (reports differ) without license plates. MMC Kenny Kunene arrived at the scene shortly after the crime took place and has also emphasized in a media statement, “I am glad that we launched the new bus fleet management system last year on October 25 2023, which included ‘eyes-on-the-bus’, a real-time camera technology that will hopefully assist with the investigation.”

“The nature of the attack suggests the woman was targeted,” said Gauteng police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo. “We are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.”

The woman’s husband reported she had expressed concerns about unfamiliar people at the bus station the previous week. The motive for the killing remains unknown.

This incident has shaken Johannesburg residents and highlighted ongoing safety concerns on public transportation.
