The football world is mourning the sudden death of Zambian striker Justin Shonga, who passed away at the young age of 27. The news was confirmed by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) on Sunday.
Shonga, a talented forward, represented both club and country throughout his career. He rose to prominence playing for Zambian club Nkwazi FC before making a splash on the South African Premier League scene with Orlando Pirates in 2017. He spent three successful seasons with the “Buccaneers,” as the team is nicknamed, before moving on to other South African clubs like Cape Town City and Sekhukhune United.
Shonga also had a brief stint with Egyptian side Ismaily SC, showcasing his ambition and willingness to test himself in new environments. He most recently returned to his first club, Nkwazi, in 2023, and was playing for Najran Sports Club in Saudi Arabia at the time of his death.
The cause of death remains unclear, with FAZ only stating that Shonga passed away after a short illness at Sikanze Police Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. More details are expected to be released in the coming days.
Tributes poured in following the news of Shonga’s passing. His former club, Orlando Pirates, expressed their shock on social media, stating, “Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.”
