Kulis River, Western Cape – A 19-year-old man, Luvo Gqaza, has been placed in the hospital wing of Pollsmoor Prison following his arrest for the alleged assault of an 82-year-old woman. The decision comes after Gqaza reportedly expressed suicidal thoughts to his investigating officer.
The case gained national attention after a video emerged online, showing Gqaza allegedly beating the elderly woman in her home. The disturbing footage sparked outrage, with many condemning the violence.
Gqaza faces charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and contravention of the Older Persons Act. He appeared briefly in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court, where his bail application was postponed to July 12th.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) intends to oppose bail. NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila cited the victim’s ongoing hospitalization and fear for her safety as key reasons for opposing release. The victim, whose name has not been released, reportedly sustained injuries during the assault and remains in medical care.
Adding another layer of concern, the EFF regional secretary, Banzi Dambuza, alleges a potential history of abuse. He claims Gqaza may have deliberately recorded the assault, suggesting he intended for it to be seen publicly.
The video depicts a verbal altercation escalating into violence. Following a disagreement, believed to be related to food, the footage shows Gqaza slapping the woman, causing her to drop a pot. He then strikes her again, forcing her to her knees. The assault continues despite the presence of the person filming the incident.
Despite the victim’s initial refusal to press charges, Kraaifontein police, upon learning of the video, investigated the case and arrested Gqaza. Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed the assault occurred in June but stated the family initially declined police intervention.
This case highlights the disturbing reality of elder abuse and the complexities of securing justice for victims. The upcoming court date will determine Gqaza’s fate while the victim recovers from the physical and emotional trauma of the assault.
