CAPE TOWN, South Africa – Schools across the Western Cape are preparing for a battering from a severe cold front expected to make landfall on Thursday, with most districts opting for a one-day closure to prioritize student and staff safety.
The provincial education department announced the special closure on Wednesday, impacting schools in Metro South, Metro Central, Metro North, Metro East, Cape Winelands, and Overberg districts. A significant portion of schools in the West Coast district will also be shut.
“The safety of our learners and teachers is paramount,” said Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier. “This decision comes after extensive consultations with the provincial disaster risk management center and the South African Weather Service.”
However, the announcement included some exceptions. Certain schools along the West Coast, along with all schools in Eden and Central Karoo districts, are expected to remain open.
“Our default position is always to keep schools functioning,” Maynier explained. “However, the severity of the weather warnings and the damage already caused in some areas necessitated this measured response.”
The department has granted authority to individual schools in unaffected districts to seek closure based on specific circumstances. Officials will closely monitor the weather situation and make further adjustments if necessary.
The impending cold front raises concerns about the well-being of students, particularly in areas with inadequate heating or infrastructure vulnerable to extreme weather. The temporary closure allows schools to prepare and prioritize safety measures during the harshest part of the weather event.
