JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – A fire ripped through an old age home in Germiston, Gauteng on Thursday morning, leaving one resident dead and displacing at least 50 others.
The blaze erupted shortly after 8:00 am at Die Ankers Tehuis, a double-story facility located on the corner of Bruce and Victoria Streets. Firefighters swiftly evacuated all residents from the building, with ER24 paramedics transporting four patients to nearby hospitals for treatment.
“The fire department did a fantastic job getting everyone out,” said Fahim Essop, ER24 branch manager for Gauteng South. “On arrival, they managed to evacuate 50 elderly residents into a yard across the road.”
As authorities investigate the cause of the fire, displaced residents are receiving temporary care. While some residents sustained injuries requiring hospitalization, at least 30 others were taken to nearby Galway Primary School.
“The school has generously opened its hall to provide shelter and support for those who are not injured but need additional assistance,” Essop explained. “Our focus now is on ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected residents during this difficult time.”
The fire highlights the vulnerability of elderly populations in residential care facilities. Fire safety protocols and emergency evacuation procedures are crucial for safeguarding these residents in case of emergencies. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
