JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Dorcas “Didi” Lekganyane, a 32-year-old environmental scientist and rising star in her field, was found stabbed to death in her Johannesburg home on Thursday, according to South African police.
Lekganyane’s death has sent shockwaves through the scientific community and beyond. Just weeks prior, she was recognized by the Mail & Guardian as one of South Africa’s 200 most influential young people. Her family called the killing “an act of senseless violence.”
Gauteng police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza confirmed that authorities are investigating a murder case. “The deceased’s partner was also found at the scene,” Kweza said. “He was taken to a nearby hospital under police guard and will be charged with murder upon his release.”
Lekganyane was a leading advocate for traditional medicine, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional practices and scientific validation. She co-founded Sweet Biotics, a company dedicated to distributing high-quality traditional tonics, and served on South Africa’s Traditional Medicinal Council, which informs policy and regulations in the field. Lekganyane’s research focused on the role and application of medicinal plants, and she frequently appeared on radio and television to promote the importance of biodiversity and sustainable practices.
“Didi was a beacon of light,” Lekganyane’s family said in a statement. “Her death will be mourned by the many people she impacted with her work, her dedication to science, and her immense humanity.”
Lekganyane’s murder highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence in South Africa. According to a 2022 report by the Medical Research Council, a South African woman is killed by an intimate partner every three hours. Lekganyane’s death serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for increased awareness and action to address this national crisis.
