MBOMBELA, South Africa – A young South African footballer, Junior Sihlangu, is on the cusp of an incredible opportunity. The 16-year-old student at St. Mark’s International School has been selected for the Siyadlala Football Academy’s U17 team, which will embark on a 16-day tour of the United States next April.
Sihlangu’s journey began last June when he impressed at trials held at Mbombela Stadium. His talent and dedication earned him a spot on the academy’s exposure program team, ultimately leading to his selection for the U.S. tour.
This trip presents a golden chance for Sihlangu. The itinerary includes no fewer than six competitive matches against American soccer clubs, academies, and university teams like Rhode Island and Mansfield. These games offer a platform for Sihlangu to showcase his skills and potentially secure scholarships or even professional contracts.
Sihlangu’s mother, Smangele, beams with pride at her son’s achievements. “I am happy for him and I believe this trip will give him the exposure he needs for his football career,” she says. However, the family faces a financial hurdle. The tour requires a R35,000 (US$1,900) participation fee, which excludes visa costs.
Smangele explains the breakdown: “It includes matches, accommodation, meals, transport, airport transfers, medical insurance, flight tickets, sightseeing, and many other activities.” To bridge this gap and allow Sihlangu to pursue his dream, the family is reaching out to the community for support.
