Johannesburg – The Gauteng Education Department is grappling with a surge in incomplete applications for the 2025 academic year, casting a shadow over the placement of thousands of prospective Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners. As of Tuesday, over 146,000 applications remained unfinished, a figure that has raised serious concerns within the department.
To secure a placement for their child, parents are required to complete all five steps of the online application process. However, a significant number have failed to do so, jeopardizing their child’s admission to a school.
Department spokesperson Steve Mabona emphasized the importance of parents carefully reviewing the SMS notifications sent by the online admission system. These messages provide crucial updates on application status, incomplete steps, and other pertinent information.
“Incomplete applications will not be processed for placement,” Mabona warned. “We urge parents to act swiftly to avoid disappointment.”
The department’s challenge underscores the immense pressure on Gauteng’s education system as it navigates rising enrollment numbers. With the looming deadline for applications, officials are working tirelessly to address the backlog and ensure all eligible learners are accommodated.
