Malmesbury, Western Cape – A devastating dam collapse has left over 200 people homeless and displaced in the Western Cape town of Riverlands. The incident occurred on Thursday, August 8, when the wall of a dam on a property known as Dassenberg breached, causing widespread flooding in the surrounding areas of Riverlands, Chatsworth, and Dassenberg.
The disaster has resulted in significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and the local environment. Fourteen people have been hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the flooding, while hundreds more are receiving humanitarian aid and temporary shelter at local churches and community centers.
Gift of the Givers has been on the ground providing essential supplies, including food, water, and blankets, to those affected by the disaster. The organization is also assisting with evacuation efforts and cleanup operations.
The cause of the dam collapse is currently under investigation, and authorities have warned residents to remain vigilant as more rain is expected in the coming days.
