Kaapmuiden, Mpumalanga – A joint operation by the Hawks, South African Police Service, and border police has led to the arrest of 31 foreign nationals for allegedly contravening the Immigration Act.

The arrests took place on Friday evening following a tip-off from Crime Intelligence about two taxis transporting undocumented people from Mozambique to Johannesburg. Law enforcement officials intercepted the vehicles near Kaapmuiden, where they discovered 16 women, 10 toddlers, four teenage girls, and 15 men without proper documentation.

The 15 men appeared in the Barberton magistrate’s court on Monday and were remanded in custody until August 20. The 10 women were also remanded, with their case postponed to Tuesday for age determination and legal aid arrangements. The cases involving the minors have been postponed pending the availability of a probation officer and social worker.

The taxi drivers and the bakkie driver were arrested on charges of kidnapping, aiding and abetting, and contravening the Immigration Act. Further details about their court appearances are yet to be released.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by South African authorities in combating illegal immigration and human trafficking.
