A 21-year-old man from Standerton, Mpumalanga, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, accused of murdering a woman whose body was discovered in the boot of her Range Rover. Cuan Karelse faces additional charges of robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Karelse allegedly entered Renee Lea’s home through an open gate on August 24. He is believed to have tied Lea up, robbed her, and then placed her body in the boot of her car.

Lea’s daughter reported her missing after being unable to reach her by phone. A tracking device on the vehicle led authorities to a petrol station in Moreleta, Pretoria, where Karelse was apprehended. Upon searching the car, police discovered Lea’s body, with cables around her neck and her mouth covered with tape.

While the exact cause of death is still under investigation, authorities suspect strangulation. The NPA has indicated that it will oppose bail in the case.

The matter has been postponed to September 2 for bail information and for the accused to consult with a Legal Aid attorney.
