Deadly Fuel Tanker Explosion Kills Dozens in Nigeria
Abuja, Nigeria – A devastating fuel tanker truck explosion in north-central Nigeria has claimed the lives of at least 48 people, according to local authorities. The incident occurred on Sunday when the tanker collided with another vehicle, leading to a chain reaction that engulfed multiple vehicles in flames.
The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in Niger state reported that the collision involved a fuel tanker and a truck carrying travelers and cattle. The agency’s spokesperson, Hussaini Ibrahim, confirmed the tragic death toll and stated that rescue efforts were ongoing.
The explosion comes amidst a backdrop of fuel shortages in Nigeria, which has been exacerbated by recent price hikes imposed by the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC). The government has increased gasoline prices by nearly 40% in the past year, but supply constraints have continued to plague the country.
