Tragic N2 Crash Claims Life of Eastern Cape Police Officer
An officer from the Mthatha K9 Unit tragically lost his life in a crash on the N2 near Tsolo while chasing suspects connected to a house robbery. The accident took place on Monday, September 16, according to Eastern Cape police.
A 49-year-old Warrant Officer was one of five officers heading to Qumbu to investigate leads when their convoy was involved in a collision with a minibus and another vehicle near Dukathole Brickyard.
The officer, who was behind the wheel of one of the two police vehicles involved in the crash, sadly died at the scene. The remaining four officers sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. While the severity of their injuries is not yet known, they are currently receiving medical care.
The officers were pursuing leads on suspects linked to a house robbery in Port Edward when the crash occurred. Despite the accident, other police units successfully apprehended the suspects later that same day.
“A case of culpable homicide was opened for further investigation. The two alleged armed suspects who were being pursued were eventually nabbed,” said Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, Police spokesperson.
“Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, conveyed her heartfelt sorrow following the tragic event.
“These members showed dedication to their duty of serving and protecting,“ Mene said.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen officer, and we hope for a speedy recovery for those injured in the accident.
