Rand Water: “Use water sparingly”

Rand Water in Gauteng has implemented level 1 water restrictions to encourage conservation and prevent supply disruptions.Water experts have expressed concerns about possible water shortages as we enter the summer season. Over the weekend, the first instances of water shortages were reported in certain areas of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Residents are urged to adjust usage habits to avoid outages, with also specific challenges noted in Kensington and Rosebank. The spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health, Khutso Rabothata, has confirmed that the water supply challenges affecting the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital have been resolved.

Selby Bokaba, spokesperson for the City of Tshwane, has warned residents to adjust their water usage habits to avoid ongoing water outages. Dr. Ferrial Adams, an expert from WaterCAN, has highlighted challenges in Kensington and Rosebank due to high demand and significant losses, emphasizing the need for an assessment of the reservoirs. Dr. Adams also stressed the recurring water restrictions during summer and the importance of conserving water due to the country’s water scarcity.

Additionally, WaterCAN has reported persistent sewage pollution in the city following the collapse of the sewerage infrastructure in Mogale, which remains a concern.
