Johannesburg – Michael Lomas, an Eskom contractor accused of R1.5 billion fraud at the Kusile Power Station, has been extradited from the United Kingdom after 11 years on the run.
Lomas was arrested by the Hawks in August 2024 and appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court. An extradition order was granted in the same month, paving the way for his return to South Africa to face the fraud charges.
The alleged fraud took place between 2008 and 2018, during which time Lomas is believed to have defrauded Eskom of R1.5 billion. The specific details of the fraud are not yet public knowledge, but it is understood that Lomas was involved in a number of corrupt activities related to the construction of the Kusile Power Station.
Lomas’ extradition is a significant development in the ongoing investigation into corruption at Eskom. It sends a message to those who would attempt to defraud the state that they will eventually be brought to justice, no matter how long it takes.
