Residents in Johannesburg south, including areas like Roodepoort and Soweto, were startled by an earth tremor just before 8pm on Tuesday. The tremor’s magnitude is still being confirmed by the Council for Geoscience. Fortunately, no injuries or damage have been reported, according to Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi. He emphasized the importance of reporting any life-threatening emergencies to the City of Johannesburg Emergency Services Call Centre at 011 375 5911.

This recent tremor follows a series of seismic activities in the region. In July, a 2.6-magnitude tremor was recorded near Johannesburg south. Preliminary findings from Gauteng Weather on X suggest that the latest tremor had a magnitude of 2.4, with its epicentre located at Doornkop.

The Council for Geoscience has documented several recent tremors in the area:

– On June 29, 2024, a 2.3-magnitude tremor occurred in Joburg south.

– On July 1, 2024, a 2.5-magnitude tremor was also recorded in Joburg south.

– On June 20, 2023, a 2.8-magnitude tremor was measured in the West Rand, affecting areas around Roodepoort.

– On June 11, 2023, a significant 5-magnitude tremor struck the East Rand, particularly around Boksburg.

The Council for Geoscience has proposed that the epicentral area for the June and July tremors could be near the Mooifontein tailings dams, located southwest of the Johannesburg CBD. These dams are situated in a network of intersecting fault or fracture structures. Over time, the weight exerted by the tailing dams’ stockpile of waste material could cause these structures to fail. This hypothesis is supported by fault plane solutions of the main events and aftershocks, which indicate a strike-slip normal fault focal mechanism with stresses oriented approximately northeast-southwest.

Another hypothesis suggests that past precipitation could have formed a water table within the tailings’ stockpile. Water infiltration through conduits could lead to differential movements within the stockpile, causing stress redistribution in underground fault or fracture structures and triggering seismic events.

These insights highlight the complex interplay of geological factors contributing to the region’s seismic activity. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and report any unusual occurrences to the appropriate authorities.
