MIDRAND, South Africa — A fire broke out at the Broadwalk Urban Village residential complex in Midrand late Tuesday night, leading to the evacuation of dozens of residents. The City of Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the call and found the second floor of the complex engulfed in flames upon arrival.
EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo reported that 130 units had to be evacuated as firefighters undertook a room-by-room search. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, although an undisclosed number of residents sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
“The cause of the fire will be investigated as soon as firefighting operations are completed,” Khumalo said, adding that the City is working with the owners of the complex to secure alternative accommodation for the displaced residents.
While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, the incident has raised concerns over fire safety in residential buildings across the city. In response, Khumalo urged Johannesburg residents to carefully inspect accommodation facilities before moving in and to ensure that all electrical appliances are turned off after use to prevent similar tragedies.
As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, the situation serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in densely populated residential complexes.
