Police Seize R5 Million Worth of Dagga in Toyota Bakkie Bust

Two suspects were nabbed by North-West police while driving a Toyota Hilux reportedly loaded with dagga worth a staggering R5 million on the street market. The suspects were caught red-handed during a stop-and-search operation in Ikageng, Potchefstroom.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone reported that suspects Asiphe Nomde, 32, and Mncedisi Mthunzini, 41, were granted release on a warning after appearing before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court. The duo is set to return to court on November 26, 2024.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, revealed that the dagga was discovered in a truck en route from Eswatini to Johannesburg. The vehicle was intercepted on the N12 freeway, just before the Dryden off-ramp.
Mdhluli explained, “At first, the search didn’t reveal anything unusual, but officers couldn’t ignore the strong scent of dagga lingering in the air. The truck was then escorted to the Delmas police station, where a K9 narcotics dog was brought in for a more thorough inspection.”
According to Mdhluli, officers uncovered a hidden compartment at the back of the truck where 63 dagga balls were stashed, each carefully wrapped in brown sellotape.
He announced the arrest of a 30-year-old man from Eswatini. “The dagga weighed in at an impressive 1,180 kilograms, with an estimated street value of around R4.7 million,” he noted. Mdhluli added that the suspect is slated to appear in court shortly.
